Getting Started
~ To begin, begin ~
You've made the decision to quit your addictions, now what?
First things first,
It would be a good idea to remove any alcohol or any other drug you may
Have in your house! Secondly, I would advise you to consult with your doctor to
See if a detox center would be appropriate for you. There are many health risks
Involved when quitting. Once, you've consulted with your doctor, some of you may
Seek a support group while others may find it useful to attend meetings.
Both can be very helpful especially early on in your recovery. You may also
Choose to go through your recovery on your own, as I did. Here's an exercise you
Might want to try, either when making the decision to quit or once you've quit.
Write the reasons why you want to quit your addictions, here's some examples:
I no longer want to wake up with a hangover.
I don't want to cause my family any more pain.
I want to live a healthier lifestyle.
Now, write the concequences that you might face should you choose to remain
Active in your addictions
I will continue to wake up with a hangover, which
Will affect my mood and may influence my work performance.
I will
Continue to hurt my family, they may decide to leave me.
I will continue
To live an unhealthy lifestyle. My alcoholism may lead to serious health problems.
Not only do I advise you to add this list to your journal but I also
Recommend hanging it in as many places possible in your house and put a copy
In your wallet, as well. It will serve as a great reminder when you
Are coping with urges. Remember that your recovery will take dedication
And alot of work on your part. Keep your eye on the prize, the rewards of
Quitting your addictions will be well worth your efforts!
"If you think you CAN'T, you probably WON'T...
We CAN quit our addictions!"
